2012 EU reissue on 180g LP- There's A Riot Going On was Sly & The Family Stones answer to Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, the seminal Soul album that came out five months before the Sly Stone masterpiece. Its a dark earthy Funk album that went straight to number 1, upon release Single Family Affair, also topped the charts and is still one of Sly Stones most beloved tracks. It manages to capture the era of militant activism and deep social unrest in a brooding moody album with tension that could cut through steel. It still appears on plenty of greatest albums of all time lists Rolling Stone placed it on 99 out of 500, and is seen as one of the most important and influential albums of the 1970s. sealed in gatefold sleeve with insert.

After the massive success of "Stand!" Sly Stone went into excess overdrive, binging on vast amounts of drugs, partying for days and spending money like there was no tomorrow. Renting a Beverly Hills mansion from The Mamas & the Papas at $12,000 a month to record a follow up, the sessions spiralled out of control with miles of tape recorded but often lost, musicians paid to play and then over-dubbed and Stone just not turning up at all. From this chaos a set of songs slowly emerged. The tracks sound like nothing ever heard before, so stunningly original it was like music brought back from another planet. "There's A Riot Goin' On" was a masterpiece of dark, simmering grooves and visions from the other side. Sly tapped the chaos and utter blackness of his own life to extract timeless art - a personal statement that ranked with the greatest of the day. With this record he paved the way for Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, George Clinton and all the other left-of-centre black musicians who followed. You need.
