2013 EU reissue on 180g LP+ download  -After a lengthy absence, Faithfull resurfaced on this 1979 album, which took the edgy and brittle sound of punk rock and gave it a shot of studio-smooth dance rock. Faithfull's whiskey-worn vocals perfectly match the bitter and biting "Why'd Ya Do It" and revitalize John Lennon's "Working Class Hero."

"Broken English stands tall as a masterpiece of broken taboos, subversive poetics and timeless songs!" Although the boundaries have shifted in the decades since the album's release, the language is still shocking, the album is still as potent as ever and remains Marianne's masterpiece, and one of the best albums by a female vocalist of all-time!

 A completely unexpected (given her previous work) but masterful album of rock songs in the New Wave style.

For Marianne Faithfull, 1979's Broken English was a radical departure, featuring a contomeporary fusion of rock and dance, with liberal use of synthesizers. No one was prepared for the transformation of Faithfull's innocent flower child image, her immediately preceding albums had been in a relatively gentle folk or country and western style. Those who listened were in for a surprise, especially those who first heard her in the '60s as the virginal voice of her boyfriend, Mick Jagger's "As Tears Go By."

 When seemingly she had disappeared entirely, she emerged with this dark but definitely musically modern work. And her voice! After years of drug abuse, her voice was lower in register, far raspier, and had a more world-weary quality than in the past that matched the often raw emotions expressed in the newer material.

Broken English was widely hailed by critics and audiences alike upon its release, going Gold without the aid of a huge hit single. The album reached the charts in the U.K., the U.S. and around the world. Broken English contains some of her most famous songs, including the title track and "The Ballad of Lucy Jordan," and was notable for the controversy surrounding the final number "Why D'Ya Do It."

 Although the boundaries have shifted in the decades since the album's release, the language is still shocking, the album is still as potent as ever and remains Marianne's masterpiece, and one of the best albums by a female vocalist of all-time!

In 1965 Marianne Faithful released two debut albums simultaneously a selftitled pop album and an album called Come My Way comprised somewhat unexpectedly of folk tunes While the first album generally reaffirmed her persona as shedevil and soulless poster child of that hedonistic generation the latter gave listeners a fleeting glimpse of a hidden darker side perhaps an unintentional foretelling of those black days that would soon follow This reissue features four bonus tracks her classic 1969 single Sister Morphine released prior to the Rolling Stones version the 1964 Bside Blowin in the Wind Et Maintenant from a 1965 EP and the 1966 Bside Thats Right Baby 180g LP bonus CD of the album from Lilith Records
