2013 EU Limited edition, high definition 180 g vinyl LP -“Jazz Contemporary”, by the Kenny Dorham Quintet was recorded for the Time label in 1960 and mixes originals by Dorham with jazz standards.There are two addes bonus tracks, not on the original LP : ”Sign Off” and a shorter, alternate take of ”Monk’s Mood”.

Composer of “Blue Bossa”, one of the most popular jazz standards of all time, trumpeter Kenny Dorham was a rather neglected and little known figure during his lifetime. Decades later, not much has changed. Greatly overshadowed by the stardom of Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Brown and Fats Navarro, his recordings demand serious re-evaluation.

Originally on the Time label, this LP features the excellent (but always underrated) trumpeter Kenny Dorham heading a quintet that also includes baritonist Charles Davis, pianist Steve Kuhn, either Jimmy Garrison or Butch Warren on bass, and drummer Buddy Enlow. The results are not quite essential but everyone plays up to par, performing three of Dorham's originals plus "In Your Own Sweet Way," "Monk's Mood," and "This Love of Mine." It's fine hard bop, the modern mainstream music of the period.
