original is RCA, Finland, 1977. good vocal jazz. "A jazz visit to the world of Disney". Recorded in Helsinki, Finland,1976. [cover] sticker on shrink. roughly good. [record] roughly good.

 

Jazz vocals can take many forms, many unfortunate, many of which are covered here. There's the hammy look-at-me Manhattan Transfer-ish spaz jazz kind, used on this LP to mutilate "Heigh-Hoo" and the opener "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah". There's the piano bar variety, used here on "Some Day My Prince Will Come" and "Alice in Wonderland", which can be (and is) painfully schmaltzy, even though they reveal Stevens' lower register to be nice and smoky. "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" starts off sounding almost Blaxploitationesque, but quickly degrades into a blues/gospel rocker, any funk-box effects being drowned out by heavy but soulless r&b.

But then there are the moments when jazz vocal music can be sublime, like on "Whistle While You Work", which overlays understated harmonized vocals onto a complex time signature, heavy on the syncopation. Or the nuanced Betty Carter-meets-Peggy Lee stylings on "Bibbidy-Bobbidy-Boo".

This album is from 1977, and one thing it demonstrates a little too well is the stylistic crisis that jazz had found itself in - when you have be-bop alongside easy-on-the-ears soul fusion electric keyboards and heavy bass, it's no wonder they looked to something like Disney to somehow give the whole album a focus. Only rarely does this record elicit "magic" (the noodling flutes with shimmering mini-moog at the end of "When You Wish Upon a Star" being one of them), and instead this effort is more about booking gigs at tacky basement jazz pubs for tourists in Orlando, FL.
