De Radeon X1550 is gebasseerd op de Radeon X-series X1300 entry level model echter heeft recentere GPU op basis van de 80 Nm techniek en is dan in 2006 ook de opvolger van de Radeon X1300. De X1550 heeft als entry level model hogere GPU Kloksnelheden vergeleken met de X1300 en met deze hogere basis kloksneldheden weet de GPU met een bescheiden ongewijzigde grafische architectuur van 4 Pixel en 2 Shader Pipes toch behoorlijke redering resultaten te behalen die hoger zijn dan de Radeon X1300 van 2200 MTexel / MPixel (2.2 Gigatexel). Als het om het onboard geheugen gaat is deze Radeon X1550 uitgevoerd met ruim 256MB sneller DDR2 geheugen dat effectief op 800Mhz DDR is geklokt. Maar het belangrijkste is nog wel de aanwezigheid van een snelle 128-bit geheugen interface wat resulteert in een beschikbare bandwijdte van bijna 13 GB/sec en dat is binnen deze generatie behoorlijk onderscheidend en 2 x keer zoveel als de Radeon X1300 (basis uitvoering/ uitgezonderd de X1300PRO 80 Nm) De X1550 is speciaal gemaakt voor het zware grafische besturingsysteem Windows Vista met een GUI (Grafische User Interface)met Aero / Glass effecten en softwarematige ondersteuning WDDM 1.0 Architectuur, (Windows Display Driver Model) De Aero egenschappen betekenen een een stijvol, elegant voorkomen, met tranparante menus, animations, icons van Windows Besturingsystemen vanaf Windows Vista. Door deze eigeschappen de ondersteunen is de Radeon X1550 ook te gebruiken met Windows 7 (WDDM 1.1) en Windows 8.0 /8.1 WDDM 1.2/1.3/ 2.0 als het gaat om de kern eigenschappen van de grafische interface / architectuur.

Als het gaat om 3D applicaties zoals Games en 3D extras aan de Aero eigenschappen dan kan de Radeon X1550 beschikken over Shader Model 3.0 en Direct3D DX 9.0c versie. Ook beschikt de Ultra Threaded Shader Enigine met extra Shadow en 3D Acceleratie met 128-bit Floating point Processing waardoor shader zwaarde applicaties kunnen worden uitgevoerd zoals games zoals Call of Duty 3 MW3 Modern Warfare. Met de AVIVO Decoding kunnen 2D bestanden / film bestanden zoals; H.264, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, VC-1 enzovoorts zonder problemen en vloeiend worden afgespeeld evenals streaming.
